A Set 17 Magic 95 guide built around Bard, Nunu & Willump, Sona, Vanguard frontline, and Shepherd utility, covering conditions, items, positioning, augments, Divinity choices, and game plan.
This is an AP-focused 95 line that does not need to rush level 9 blindly. You use AP items and frontline items to winstreak, stabilize around level 8, then convert the board into Bard, Sona, Nunu & Willump, and the Vanguard-Shepherd core.
What to remember
- check_circleEnter when your early AP items and tank items can support a winstreak transition.
- check_circleAt level 8, stabilize with upgraded 4-cost AP units or a strong 5-cost before pushing higher.
- check_circleBard is the primary late-game AP carry, while Sona supplies mana, shred, and anti-heal utility.
Core positioning
Frontline anchor / Primary carry / Physical damage / Magic damage / Backup carry
Playable Conditions
Play this when your opener can winstreak with AP items and frontline items. You do not need a pure fast-9 opener; the key is having enough board strength to reach level 8 with health to roll.
Standard Board

The finished board is Mordekaiser, Meepsie, Illaoi, Nunu & Willump, Karma, Blitzcrank, Vex, Bard, and Sona. It gives 4 Vanguard, 3 Shepherd, 2 Oracle, 2 Voyager, 2 Dark Star, and 1 Space Groove.
Vex is not mandatory. If you do not have items for her or you have an extra slot, replace her with Aurelion Sol, a second upgraded Blitzcrank, Rhaast, The Mighty Mech, Pyke, or Morgana depending on quality.
At level 8, build around the core Vanguard-Shepherd pieces and add whichever upgraded high-cost AP unit can carry your items. Aurelion Sol, Karma, Bard, Vex, LeBlanc, Nami, or Sona can all bridge if the item fit is right.
Emblem
Take Voyager Emblem only when it appears naturally. Put it on a carry so the extra Voyager breakpoint gives more late-game value without breaking your frontline.
Items
Main Carry Bard wants Jeweled Gauntlet, Rabadon's Deathcap, and Striker's Flail. If he is only a secondary carry, move him toward utility instead.
Main Tank Nunu & Willump wants Iceblast Armor, Warmog's Armor, and Crownguard. Other high-value tank items are fine if the components point that way.
Secondary Carry Sona needs at least one mana-start item. Spear of Shojin, Void Staff, and Morellonomicon cover cast frequency, shred, and anti-heal. Extra items can go to Blitzcrank or Vex.
Item Notes
Patience is a VirtuesilverFirst complete one frontline item set, one damage item set, and one backline utility set. That gives the comp enough tempo to hold HP before the legendary board comes online.
Do not force Vex items at the start. A 2-star Vex with perfect items is strong, but she is hard to upgrade and Guinsoo's Rageblade has weaker mid-game holders. Only commit when you are clearly streaking into her line.
Bard plays like Aurelion Sol as an AP carry: pure damage is the default, with at most one startup item. If the board pivots into Vex, move Bard's damage items to Vex and let Bard hold the utility items.
If you hit Patience Is a Virtue from Ekko, pair Jeweled Gauntlet with Striker's Flail or Giant Slayer. Bard and other Oracle units can convert repeated hits into strong crit and damage amp value.
Comp Breakdown
The strength of this line is that it does not have to play like a strict fast-9 board. You can roll at level 8 for a 2-star 4-cost AP unit or a playable 1-star legendary, stabilize stage 4, then transfer items into Bard and Sona later.
Compared with a N.O.V.A. 95 finish, this board gives up some first-place ceiling but is easier to stabilize on average. That makes it attractive when the lobby tempo is too fast for a clean level-9 rush.
Positioning
In mirrors or against Nunu & Willump, use Blitzcrank to control the direction of the enemy Nunu cast. Because Blitzcrank is the only Warrior-like front unit in this setup, he is unlikely to take random focus early.
Enemy Nunu usually targets the closest front unit first, then casts toward that line. If their cast angles toward your backline corner, move Blitzcrank one hex to change the attack direction and pull the cast away from Bard and Sona.

God Choices
Prioritize Ahri, Aurelion Sol, Thresh, or Yasuo when the reward gives gold, items, or direct combat strength. Avoid Varus here because the board is not built around his reward pattern.
Game Plan

Early and mid game, play around 3 Shepherd and Vanguard while matching items to low-cost holders. Units in the first item lane want Guinsoo-style scaling; the second lane wants mana plus AP; the third lane can hold utility; the fourth lane is for pure AP damage.
Around 4-2, level to 8 and roll for a 2-star 4-cost AP unit or a strong 1-star legendary backline, plus a 2-star Illaoi, Nunu & Willump, The Mighty Mech, or Morgana frontline. If you are below 40 HP, roll deeper for Aurelion Sol plus a stable frontline before pushing.
Around 5-1, push level 9 and look for the in-system legendary upgrades. Do not field itemless Vex just because she is expensive. Once two or more 5-costs are upgraded, go higher and add traits that buff the whole board.
