A Set 17 Dark Star Kai'Sa guide covering playable conditions, the final board, items, positioning, augments, divinities, and game flow.
Dark Star Kai'Sa is one of the strongest Set 17 climbing lines. With a Dark Star Emblem it has a very high cap, and even without one, early Kai'Sa plus correct items can still play for a stable top-four.
What to remember
- check_circleCommit hardest when you have Dark Star Emblem, or when Kai'Sa and her Infinity Edge, Striker's Flail, and Blue Buff setup arrive naturally.
- check_circleKai'Sa is the main carry. Illaoi holds utility tank items, and with Emblem she enables the 6 Dark Star board.
- check_circleKeep Kai'Sa on the same side as your utility tank items and attack the enemy weak side so she can clean units and start chaining casts.
Core positioning

Playable Conditions
Prioritize this comp when you have Dark Star Emblem. Without Emblem, only enter when Kai'Sa appears early and your item direction naturally points toward Infinity Edge, Striker's Flail, and Blue Buff.
Standard Comp
The capped board uses Lissandra, Mordekaiser, Meepsie, Illaoi, Kai'Sa, Riven, Karma, Jhin, and Ezreal. Put Dark Star Emblem on Illaoi to reach 6 Dark Star, 3 Shepherd, 2 Rogue, 2 Sniper, 2 Vanguard, 2 Voyager, and 2 Timebreaker.
On level 7, build around Lissandra, Mordekaiser, Meepsie, Illaoi, Kai'Sa, Riven, and Karma. Add Jhin on level 8. If Jhin is missing, use Cho'Gath or higher-quality Rogue units temporarily. On level 9, add Ezreal for the cap.
Without Dark Star Emblem, do not force a weak 6 Dark Star board. Stay on 4 Dark Star and add strong Rogues, five-costs, or utility frontline.
Emblems
Dark Star Emblem is the main cap and usually goes on Illaoi. It opens 6 Dark Star while keeping your frontline useful. Without it, play 4 Dark Star with stronger units instead of forcing low-quality trait depth.
Items
Main carry Kai'Sa wants Infinity Edge, Striker's Flail, and Blue Buff. Infinity Edge enables ability crits, Striker's Flail improves burst chaining, and Blue Buff makes the first reset faster.
Main tank Illaoi wants Evenshroud, Sunfire Cape, and leftover tank items. If she is holding Dark Star Emblem, prioritize the two utility tank items first.
Riven uses extra fighter items such as Sterak's Gage, Titan's Resolve, and Bloodthirster. Karma uses spare AP items such as Jeweled Gauntlet, Nashor's Tooth, and Spear of Shojin. Jhin can take late-game drops.
Item Breakdown
Item priority is Kai'Sa first, then utility, then either Riven or Karma depending on your components, and finally Jhin items later.
Infinity Edge is the most important Kai'Sa item. Striker's Flail and Blue Buff both help her convert the first takedown into a chain of casts. Since Kai'Sa refunds mana on kills and has a long cast finish, Spear of Shojin is not mandatory.
Illaoi helps Kai'Sa break the frontline. Evenshroud gives Armor shred, Sunfire adds anti-heal, and the third defensive slot can follow your components.
Comp Breakdown
Dark Star gives a huge amount of offensive stats. Even at 4 Dark Star, a 2-star Kai'Sa can out-damage many ordinary 2-star four-cost carries in the mid game. Her kill-to-mana reset also fits the trait's burst pattern very well.
With Emblem, Illaoi lets you reach 6 Dark Star without relying on an early Jhin. Without Emblem, stabilize with 2-star Kai'Sa, then work toward either 2-star Jhin or 3-star Kai'Sa.
Positioning
Place Kai'Sa on the same side as Evenshroud and Sunfire so she attacks the opponent's weak side first. Illaoi and Mordekaiser hold the frontline, while Meepsie, Karma, Jhin, and Ezreal spread across the backline. Swap sides often in the final rounds.

Divinity Choices
Varus and Soraka are the best first looks because the board and Dark Star summons benefit heavily from extra Health. Aurelion Sol and Evelynn are more about gambling for Emblem access.
Game Plan
If you hit Kai'Sa early, play her immediately. Common bridges are Talon, or 2-star Ezreal with 3 Timebreaker.
Level to 7 around 3-5 and roll for 2-star Kai'Sa plus 2-star Illaoi. Decide between slow rolling and leveling based on contesting, Kai'Sa count, and augments. With Dark Star Emblem, level 8 is usually the first priority.
When level 8 quality is stable and your HP is healthy, go 9 for Jhin and Ezreal. Without Emblem, the late game usually needs 3-star Kai'Sa or 2-star Jhin.
