Jax is a 2-cost Stargazer and Bastion champion that usually plays as a frontline sustain unit. Its sustain or shielding makes it valuable when it survives long enough to buy time for the rest of the board. Jax appears in Cards & Cartridges and Snipin & Vibin lines, so keep copies when those boards are open.
Consider playing around Jax when you naturally upgrade it between Stage 2 and Stage 3 and can afford to slow roll. For items, Protector's Vow and Gargoyle Stoneplate are strong signals that Jax can stay on the board. For team direction, it fits naturally when you are already moving toward Cards & Cartridges and Snipin & Vibin. If it stays one-star, the traits do not activate, or the items point elsewhere, treat it as a transition unit instead of forcing the line.
Protector's Vow, Gargoyle Stoneplate and Spirit Visage are recommended. Protector's Vow balances early mana and durability, Gargoyle Stoneplate scales well when several enemies target the same frontliner and Spirit Visage matches the unit's combat pattern. The point of the setup is to keep it alive long enough to cast and hold the frontline.
When the perfect setup is not available, use Steadfast Heart, Warmog's Armor, Bramble Vest and Dragon's Claw as substitutes. For frontline substitutes, prioritize durability, sustain, and opening damage reduction without stealing every carry item. If Jax is only a trait slot, one useful item is enough and the premium items should go to your real carry or main tank.
Early: a two-star Jax can stabilize well when Stargazer and Bastion is already active. Mid game: decide between slow rolling for upgrades or using it as a bridge while leveling. Late game: keep it when the items and traits still point toward it; otherwise upgrade into a higher-cost carry or tank.
Place Jax in the first row near the center so the control reaches key targets. Against heavy burst, move it one hex off-center and pair it with another frontliner. It starts with some mana, making the first cast timing important.

Mountain: Every 5 player combats, gain a Stargazer Emblem. Empowered Stargazers gain 15% Health, 8% Attack Speed, and 5% Durability.
Altar: Any unit death sacrifices it to the altar. Allies in empowered hexes gain 8% Health and 8% Attack Speed. After 60 sacrifices, empowered Stargazers gain an additional 20% Health and 18% Attack Speed.
Medal: Allies in empowered hexes gain 12% Damage Amp, increased by 5% for each 3-star ally.
Fountain: Allies in empowered hexes gain 1 Mana Regen. Empowered Stargazers gain more, and their abilities heal the lowest-Health ally for 3% of damage dealt. At Stargazer (5), they also gain 9% AD/AP every 2 seconds.
Boar: On winning player combat, gain gold. Allies in empowered hexes gain 8% Health, AD, and AP. Stargazers gain more.
